“I have always been ‘the artist’ ever since a pencil was first put in my hand - aged about eighteen months!” | “My UK childhood was spent drawing, painting and amazing people with my 'gift'. After my ‘Dickensian’ education and Art College, ‘Commercial Art’ and illustrating seemed to be the only way to offer a living then, and so the Advertising World beckoned. As a versatile creative, I spent 30 very full years in the Advertising Business in the UK, Middle East and Australia, owning my own Advertising Agencies in Adelaide, Alice Springs and Perth and venturing into the Film and TV Commercial world as a Writer/Producer. Living in Dubai as an Advertising Consultant with major clients, my 50th Birthday was a milestone, and brought me an opportunity to become the full-time artist - that I had always longed to be”. |
| In Dubai in the 1990's, I was fascinated by the distorted images reflected in the mirrored-glass of the many towers 'springing up' out of the desert. When these are accurately transferred to canvas, they become 'puzzles' for the eye - creating juxtaposition between reality and image. Living, travelling and exhibiting in many countries has offered me a wide range of subject opportunities. I still enjoy the discipline of painting realistically, often introducing a little ‘whimsy’ now into my subjects. My Merseyside background, with an inherited love of ships and the River, found my marine work selected and exhibited several years running by the Royal Society of Marine Artists at their Annual Exhibitions - at The Mall Galleries, in London. | Illustrating people had always figured in my advertising work, and I was now free to explore serious portraiture. I enjoy getting to know a subject, and capturing that often ‘brief, recognisable expression’, which others also recognise. While Sydney based, I was a Committee Member of Portrait Artists Australia, virtually from its start in 2002, and represented by Sara Roney Gallery and The Wentworth Gallery. Portraiture has given me the opportunity to meet Prime Ministers & Politicians, Scientists, Judiciary, Sporting & TV Personalities, Indigenous people etc., in many countries. I welcome Portrait Commissions - to produce a treasured family heirloom for the generations to come. "I look forward to hearing from you.” David. |
